Asscher Cut Diamonds Asscher cut diamonds embody the elegance of an earlier age. The squarish step cut was patented in 1902 by the highly regarded Asscher Diamond Co. from Amsterdam. It features a small table, high crown, deep pavilion and cut corners--characteristics that put its sparkle on par with the brilliant-cut diamond.
In order to fill this demand, Holland's Royal Asscher Company has re-issued the cut--with a makeover. They used computer simulations to find the best blend of old and new in its reformulation. Trademarked the Royal Asscher Cut, it was launched in 2001 and has been embraced by the jewelry industry, the media and the public. The Royal Asscher Cut retains the small table, high crown and deep pavilion of the original. However, it has wider corners and an extra row of facets, for a total of seventy-four. The effect is a series of endless reflection patterns seen through the top of the stone. Original Asscher cuts may still be found in antique jewelry stores and auctions, but they are few and far between. Thankfully, the new Royal Asscher Cut makes the beauty of this refined and graceful cut available to all! Our next article is about Princess Cut Diamonds >>
